Bump Day 2020: Raising Awareness for World Wide Maternal Healthcare

Today is #BumpDay. The purpose of this day is to help raise awareness about the need for worldwide maternal healthcare. According to bumpday.org, more than 800+ women die from issues related to pregnancy every day. Also, 1 out of 5 births around the world take place without a trained expert in attendance. This should not be. When women have support and adequate access to prenatal care during their pregnancy, labor, delivery and even after childbirth, most maternal deaths can be prevented. Did you know that Black women are 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women? This is a heartbreaking statistic. All women should receive quality maternal healthcare regardless of race, ability to pay, or where they live. When I found out I was expecting, finding a skilled OB-GYN that I was comfortable with was of the utmost importance. I sought out a doctor who was knowledgeable and could relate to my experience as a black woman. Particularly, I needed someone who understood the health disparities related to black women and childbirth, and who would ensure a safe and enjoyable pregnancy, labor and delivery, and after childbirth experience. I was so happy to find those things and more, in my doctor. Not only is she a black woman, but a mother who took my concerns seriously and helped to ease my worries. For my readers who are mothers, how was your maternal healthcare experience?
