My Top 5 Protective Styles for Natural Hair
I’ve been natural for a while now, and have tried many different styles over the years. Although I love wearing my hair in its natural state, natural hair takes work and can sometimes take a good amount of time. Years ago as a new natural, I would enjoy spending 2 to 3 hours each week washing my hair and experimenting with different styles. These days, I’ve grown to love wearing my hair in protective styles. I enjoy styles that require little maintenance, while keeping my hair protected so that I can spend my time doing other things I enjoy. In today’s post, I’m sharing 5 of my favorite protective hairstyles.Makeda TwistsI’d have to say that Makeda Twists are my all time favorite protective style. The hair used for this style blends so well with my natural texture that people think all of this is my real hair! I love the fact that this style gives me an elongated look, when otherwise my natural hair would shrink up when any type of heat, humidity or moisture hits it. It also gives me volume, which I love. Believe it or not, when I straighten my real hair, it is about the same length as in this picture. This style can last 6-8 weeks and can be washed when styled in two-strand twists. The PonytailWho doesn’t love a cute ponytail? I know I do! I used to always wear my natural hair in a puff, but now I’ve swapped the puff for the ponytail. Nope, the ponytail is not grown from my scalp lol. My hair is slicked back and put into a ball, and the hair is sewn on. This style lasts me a good 2 to 3 weeks.Flat TwistsThis style is pretty simple, yet convenient. It’s just two flat twists. It is really understated, but can be jazzed up by adding some cute hair accessories. My flat twists typically last 1-2 weeks.BraidsBraids are a great protective style! Depending on how they are installed, they typically last 6 to 8 weeks for me.Kinky TwistsI really enjoy wearing Kinky Twists. They give you a slightly different look than braids. I tend to wear mine at a length just beyond the shoulders. With proper care, they usually last 6 to 8 weeks. What are your thoughts on these protective styles? Have any favorites?
