What I Wore to My HBCU Homecoming (GHOE-Greatest Homecoming On Earth) at North Carolina A&T State University
I know most people like to put their best foot forward when getting dressed every day, ensuring they have on an outfit that they love and feel confident in. However, that mindset is amplified when it comes to planning outfits for special events. If you attended an HBCU, you know what I’m talking about. HBCU homecomings are the ultimate fashion show! Wearing the proper “fit” is a must. Things need to be on point because you’re constantly meeting new people and seeing others you haven’t seen in years. Most likely, you will need multiple looks each day depending on how many events you attend.
This year, I ordered a few items like I usually do, hoping they would work well, but they didn’t. Almost everything I ordered either wasn’t flattering and/or didn’t arrive in time. Talk about a letdown…. ugh…I was highly annoyed! But I am proud of myself. I did not let the disappointment ruin my experience, so I went in my closet and started pulling stuff out. Each look didn’t turn out 100% how I wanted it to, due to time restraints. However, I went on, had fun and wore the outfits with confidence.
Learning Lesson: Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Use what you have, and make it work the best you can. When all else fails, incorporate and rely on your “outfit formula” (a go-to look you wear that makes you feel confident and pulled together, i.e.- a jumpsuit, slip dress, two-piece set, etc.). Use accessories to add interest to each outfit, and always remember that a simple look can be elevated with the proper hair style and makeup.
